The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) in the Republican-led House of Representatives voted 3-2 this week to declare the January 6th Committee, also known as the J6 Committee, as illegitimate.
The vote immediately invalidates all subpoenas issued by the committee, and now the House can proceed to file an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in Steve Bannon’s case, Bannon having been directly involved in the events that occurred on Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol.
“[House Speaker Johnson] did such a good thing here,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) wrote in a tweet.
“Should have been done DAY ONE of Republican control. We are finally beginning to clean up the mess and remediate the harm of the J6 UnSelect / Illegal Committee.”

(Related: Back in the spring, those who participated in the January 6 event filed a class action lawsuit alleging police misconduct and brutality.)
The J6 Committee was established by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi back in 2021 during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) “pandemic.” It led to Bannon receiving a four-month prison sentence, set to start on July 1, for refusal to comply with committee subpoenas.
With the J6 Committee no longer a thing, the fate of Bannon, a retired Navy officer and former executive chairman at Breitbart News, could change. Don’t forget as well that Bannon spent seven months as President Trump’s chief strategist and senior counselor in 2017 after he helped successfully guide Trump’s 2016 campaign to victory.
Since Trump is the guy who basically led the charge on January 6, his followers who are being persecuted and imprisoned want answers. One of them is former Trump regime adviser Peter Navarro who is already serving a four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress.
“The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group voted 3-2 to file a brief with the D.C. Circuit in the case against Steve Bannon,” announced House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in a joint statement with Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.).
“The amicus brief will be submitted after Bannon files a petition for rehearing en banc and will be in support of neither party. It will withdraw certain arguments made by the House earlier in the litigation about the organization of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol during the prior Congress.”
The GOP leaders added in their statement that they believe then-Speaker Pelosi “abused her authority when organizing the Select Committee.”
Back when Pelosi was forming the committee in July 2021, she rejected then-House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s choice of Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) and Jim Jordan (R-Oh.) to serve as the GOP representatives on the panel. As a result, McCarthy refused to let any Republicans participate in the “sham process,” prompting Pelosi to instead choose RINO Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.).
“Speaker Johnson and House leadership showed tremendous courage in repudiating the illegally constituted J6 Committee and its activities / investigations,” Bannon celebrated following the dissolution of the J6 Committee.
Johnson, meanwhile, has been making the media rounds to announce the House GOP’s plans moving forward.
“The previous statement of the House, under Speaker Pelosi, was incorrect,” Johnson told CNN in a recent interview.
“We do not believe the January 6 special committee was properly constituted. We don’t think it followed the House rules. And now we’re finding, under our own investigation, that they have in fact covered up some evidence. That’s a great concern to a lot of people.”
