Twitter has evolved significantly since it first launched back in 2006. It has transitioned from a typical social media site that was primarily used by young people to share their lives with the world, to a site that is now used just as much to share news and current events as it is for socializing and entertainment. In recent months, however, it appears that Twitter is beginning to change yet again, and it is starting to become blatantly obvious that the social media site now has, as one of its primary goals, the advancement of liberalism and the suppression of conservative thought.
Last week, The Daily Caller reported that during the last two months of the 2016 presidential campaign, Twitter intentionally buried tweets related to hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and the chairman of the Clinton campaign John Podesta. According to Twitter general counsel Sean Edgett, the social media website hid nearly half of the tweets that included the #DNCLeak hashtag and 25 percent of the tweets that used the hashtag #PodestaEmails.
“Approximately one quarter (25%) of [#PodestaEmails tweets] received internal tags from our automation detection systems that hid them from searches,” Edgett explained, adding, “Our systems detected and hid just under half (48%) of the Tweets relating to variants of another notable hashtag, #DNCLeak, which concerned the disclosure of leaked emails from the Democratic National Committee.”
Edgett explained that Twitter made the decision to hide the tweets as “part of our general efforts at the time to fight automation and spam on our platform across all areas.” (Related: Twitter’s crackdown on speech is rapidly turning the platform into a mindless cesspool of conformist stupidity.)
But this is the same excuse that the American people are told time and time again whenever a website or social media company is caught suppressing information that isn’t consistent with the liberal agenda – it’s to “fight spam” or “combat fake news” being spread across the Internet. They disguise their anti-free speech agendas behind phony righteousness, and their motives are almost always political. In this case, Twitter’s motive was obvious – they were trying to defend Hillary Clinton by hiding damaging tweets about her in the weeks leading up to the presidential election.
Unfortunately, Twitter is not the only social media website that has attempted to shut down conservative speech. Last year, it was revealed that employees at Facebook had modified its formulas and algorithms to slow the spread of right-wing news across the social media platform.
According to one source, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear that he would lose his job, “Things would be blacklisted or trending… I’d come on shift and I’d discover that CPAC or Mitt Romney or Glenn Beck or popular conservative topics wouldn’t be trending because either the curator didn’t recognize the news topic or it was like they had a bias against Ted Cruz.”
Of course, Facebook denied the allegations that were being made against them, claiming that they always try to be fair and attempt to stay as far away from political bias as they can. Still, it sounds an awful lot like Facebook just knows what to say when it gets caught, and really doesn’t regret targeting conservative news in the slightest. In addition to Twitter and Facebook, other popular sites such as Google, YouTube, GoDaddy and Paypal have all been engaged in this same sort of anti-free speech effort to silence conservative voices at one point or another. As constitutionalists and liberty-minded individuals, it is our duty to not only resist those who seek to shut us down, but to also wake up our fellow Americans to this growing threat appearing before our very eyes.
